Joy on the Job by Doris Helge, Ph.D.

- 3 March 2009, 01:03

As a tribute to Paul Harvey, I recently heard Sam Donaldson state that “In Paul’s case he never thought about retiring, it’s what he loved to do.  There’s an old expression: If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.  I think Paul Harvey would probably tell you: I never worked a day in my life. It was his joy and honor to share the world with you.”

“Joy on the Job” by Doris Helge, Ph.D. teaches us that the secret to career fulfillment: “…is not to create change.  The intent is to increase your awareness of existing behaviors, patterns, and attitudes because self-awareness spontaneously creates change.”

Doris has many thought provoking step-by-step exercises and examples that can guide all of us to achieve the highest level of fulfillment possible within our chosen professions.  She teaches us that “When disagreeable events arise, remind yourself that every obstacle is an opportunity to create more joy.”

“Joy on the Job” is a true eye-opener that made me view my career in a new way.  This book helped me to identify how to use my job “as a flame to light my soul and achieve my purpose in life.”  After all, as Paul Harvey’s happiness and success reflected: work is not just a way to make a living, “it’s a way to create a more joyful life.”
